Doha – May 10, 2026
The Board of Directors of the Qatar Basketball Federation held its regular meeting, chaired by Mr. Mohammed bin Saad Al-Mughaiseeb, President of the Federation, with the participation of board members. The meeting focused on reviewing the outcomes of the 2025–2026 sports season and discussing plans and programs for the upcoming stage, amid the significant momentum basketball continues to enjoy in Qatar at both the domestic competition level and through national team participation.

Mr. Al-Mughaiseeb opened the meeting by welcoming the board members and expressing his appreciation for the tremendous efforts made throughout the season, which contributed to the success of various tournaments and events. He emphasized that the achievements of the current season reflect the scale of administrative, technical, and organizational work within the Federation, underscoring the ongoing development of basketball in Qatar across all levels.

The Federation President highlighted that the 2025–2026 season was marked by strong competitions and organizational success, beginning with the inaugural edition of the Qatar Basketball Super Cup, which added a distinctive new dimension to the domestic calendar and concluded with Al Rayyan Club crowned champions. The season also witnessed fierce competition in the three major domestic tournaments, with Al Arabi Club asserting its dominance by winning the League Championship, the Qatar Cup, and the prestigious HH the Emir Basketball Cup.

Mr. Al-Mughaiseeb reaffirmed the Federation’s commitment to youth development, describing it as the cornerstone for building the future of the sport. The season featured numerous age‑group tournaments with broad club participation, alongside continued efforts to enhance talent identification and nurture young players through carefully designed technical programs aimed at supplying the national teams with promising talent in the years ahead.

As part of its strategy to broaden participation, the Board discussed the progress achieved in women’s basketball, highlighted by the organization of the Women’s and Girls’ League Championship. The competition demonstrated notable growth in both participation and technical standards, reflecting the increasing focus on developing women’s sports and providing a supportive environment for Qatari and resident female players.

The meeting also reviewed the national teams’ participation during the current season in regional and continental competitions. A key agenda item was preparation for the 4th Gulf Games, hosted in Doha starting Monday, May 11, 2026. This event represents a milestone for Gulf sports in general and Qatari basketball in particular, with Qatar’s men’s and women’s teams competing in the 3×3 basketball discipline.

The Board extended its congratulations to the Qatar men’s 3×3 basketball team for their outstanding achievement in winning the gold medal at the Asian Beach Games “Sanya 2026,” following a decisive 21–10 victory over Thailand in the final—further cementing Qatar’s strong presence on the Asian basketball stage.

Looking ahead, the meeting discussed the national teams’ preparation programs for upcoming commitments. The senior men’s team faces crucial fixtures in the Asian qualifiers for the FIBA Basketball World Cup “Qatar 2027,” which will be hosted in Doha for the first time in the region’s history. Expectations are high for Qatar to maintain its strong performances and secure a place in the global finals. Additionally, the national teams are preparing for the 20th Asian Games “Aichi–Nagoya 2026,” scheduled from September 19 to October 4, where the Federation aims to provide optimal training and technical support to ensure honorable representation and positive results.

The Board stressed the importance of continuing to work within the approved strategic framework, focusing on the development of domestic competitions, strengthening national team preparation programs, investing in youth categories, and expanding community engagement with the sport—all contributing to further success in the coming period.

In conclusion, Mr. Al-Mughaiseeb affirmed that the Qatar Basketball Federation remains steadfast in its pursuit of achievements at both local and international levels. He praised the substantial support enjoyed by Qatari sports, which has fueled the remarkable progress across all disciplines, and emphasized that the next stage requires intensified efforts to preserve these gains and sustain the path of growth and success.
