Qatar Basketball Team Faces Japan in World Cup 2027 Qualifiers

Doha – August 30, 2026:
The Qatar national basketball team will face a tough test against Japan in the second round of the current window of the Asian qualifiers for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027. The match will be played at Toyota Arena Tokyo at 1:10 PM Doha time, carrying significant weight for both teams in Group F, which also includes China, Lebanon, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia.

Qatar opened its campaign in this window with a 57–83 loss to China last Thursday at Al Janoub Arena in Doha, while Japan started strongly with a 106–78 victory over Saudi Arabia. Rui Hachimura starred in that game, scoring 29 points to give the hosts a morale boost ahead of their clash with Qatar.

The Qatari squad for this window features 12 players: Mustafa Fouda, Mike Lewis, Mahmoud Darwish, Abdullah Mousa, Ndawi Elhaj Sidou, Abdullah Saad, Mohamed Hashem, Ousmane Dieng, Osama Arafa, Abdulrahman Yahya, Omar Saad, and Aladji Bobo Magassa.

The team is led by Turkish head coach Hakan Demir, assisted by Cengiz Karadag, Maurice Memic, and Abdou Sow, with Mohamed Vural overseeing fitness and conditioning. The delegation in Japan is headed by Mr. Saadoun Sabah Al-Kuwari, Secretary General of the Qatar Basketball Federation and Director of National Teams, supported by team manager Jassim Ibrahim Ashkanani and assistant manager Nabil Jumaa. The medical staff includes Dr. Adel Harmiya (team doctor), Dr. Adel Salim (physiotherapist), and Nikasio Sagaino (massage specialist).

The coaching staff hopes that the short preparation period will positively reflect on the team’s performance against Japan, particularly in terms of defensive focus, reducing errors, and improving offensive efficiency.

The Tokyo encounter adds to a long history between the two sides. FIBA records show eight previous meetings, with Qatar winning five and Japan three. The most recent clash came in the 2019 World Cup qualifiers, where Japan won 96–48 on February 24, 2019, and also prevailed 85–47 in November 2018. Japan defeated Qatar 81–67 in the 2015 Asia Cup quarterfinals, while Qatar edged Japan 75–74 in the 2013 edition. Qatar also claimed victories in 2007 (86–82), 2005 (74–62), and 2003 (68–47). Their first recorded meeting was in 2001, when Qatar won 74–65. Despite Japan winning the last three encounters, Qatar holds the overall edge with five wins to Japan’s three.

The match is part of a busy schedule for Qatar, which continues its second-phase qualifiers against South Korea on November 26, hosts Japan in Doha on November 29, visits China on February 26, 2027, and concludes against South Korea on March 1, 2027.

In parallel, Qatar is preparing to compete in basketball at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games in Japan. Drawn into Group B alongside Iran, Jordan, and Chinese Taipei, the tournament represents another key milestone in the team’s preparation ahead of hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 in Doha.
