Al Shamal Defeats Al Wakrah in the League

Doha – January 19, 2026:
Al Shamal team achieved an important and impactful victory over Al Wakrah with a score of 80-76, in the match that brought them together on the evening of Monday, January 19, 2026, at Al Gharafa Hall, as part of the 15th round matches of the Second Division in the General Basketball League championship for the 2025-2026 sports season. The game was characterized by strong physical play and tactical fluctuations until the final seconds.
Al Wakrah entered the match with a direct offensive style, relying on early pressure and quick transitions from defense to attack, which gave them the advantage in the first quarter, which they won 29-19, thanks to good spacing outside the arc and successful exploitation of fast-break opportunities.
However, Al Shamal demonstrated a clear ability to read the game early on and gradually began adjusting their defensive system during the second quarter by tightening coverage on Al Wakrah’s key playmakers and limiting spaces. They ended the period leading 20-19, restoring balance to the match proceedings.
With the start of the third quarter, Al Shamal fully imposed their rhythm, as their defensive effectiveness rose noticeably—especially in closing the paint and preventing penetrations. This was directly reflected in their offensive output, as they won the period 20-12, benefiting from quick ball rotation and smart execution of fast breaks, turning the tide of the match in their favor before entering the fourth quarter.
The decisive fourth quarter extended Al Shamal’s dominance, as they maintained their composure in managing the final minutes, successfully capitalized on free throws, and reduced individual errors. They finished the period ahead 21-16, securing the win by four points in a match that showcased strong character and a high ability to handle score pressure.
On the individual level, Al Wakrah’s player Aaron Randolph Mitchell delivered a distinguished offensive performance and was his team’s standout with 26 points, showing variety in scoring solutions—though his efforts were not enough to avoid the loss.
In contrast, Shane Legend Rector led the scoring for Al Shamal with 20 points, alongside his impactful contributions in the crucial moments of the match.
The match also featured the outstanding performance of Osama Abdulnasser Arefa from Al Arabi Club, who won the award for Best Qatari Player of the Match, presented by Msafir Company and valued at 100 dollars, in recognition of his balanced performance and positive impact on the flow of the game.
With this victory, Al Shamal raised their tally to 21 points, strengthening their position in sixth place in the standings and confirming their competitiveness in the Second Division of the league. Meanwhile, Al Wakrah remained in fifth place with 22 points after a loss that revealed some defensive challenges, which the technical staff will work to address in the upcoming rounds.
