Doha – August 27, 2026:
The Qatar national basketball team has put behind its loss to China and begun preparations for its upcoming match against Japan, scheduled for Monday, August 31 in Tokyo, as part of the fourth window of the second round of the Asian qualifiers for the FIBA Basketball World Cup – Qatar 2027.
The game will be held at Toyota Arena Tokyo, marking another stern test for Qatar against one of Asia’s leading teams, following its 57–83 defeat to China in the opening fixture of the current window.
Qatar fell to China on Thursday, August 27, at Al Janoub Arena before a large home crowd, delivering a mixed performance across the four quarters. China took the first quarter 23–13, while Qatar showed greater resilience in the second, narrowly losing 24–23. The Chinese side reasserted control in the third quarter (19–12) and sealed victory in the fourth (17–9), finishing with a 27‑point margin.
Mike Lewis led Qatar’s scoring with 14 points, while China’s Hansen Yang topped the game with 15 points. Qatar’s roster featured Mustafa Fouda, Mike Lewis, Mahmoud Darwish, Abdullah Musa, Ndawi Elhaj Sidou, Abdullah Saad, Mohamed Hashem, Ousmane Dieng, Osama Arafa, Abdulrahman, Omar Saad, and Aladji Bobo Magassa.
The Japan encounter comes after Qatar concluded the first round of qualifiers with an impressive record of four wins and two losses, securing second place in Group D and advancing to the second round. Results carried over into Group F, where Qatar now competes alongside China, Japan, Lebanon, Korea, and Saudi Arabia. FIBA has described Group F as one of the most competitive and balanced of the second round, with five teams vying for qualification spots.
Heading into the fourth window, both Japan and Qatar share identical records of four wins and two losses, underscoring the significance of the upcoming clash and its impact on group standings.
Although Qatar is guaranteed a place at the 2027 World Cup as host nation, its participation in the qualifiers is a vital component of the team’s preparation program, offering the coaching staff opportunities to test players against diverse Asian competition.
The Japan fixture carries added technical importance, being played away from Doha against a team with extensive experience at both Asian and international levels. FIBA has highlighted the match as one of the standout contests of the fourth window, framing it as a major test for Qatar at the outset of its second‑round campaign.
Qatar’s schedule continues in November, when it hosts Korea on November 26, followed by Japan in Doha on November 29. The team will then travel to face China on February 26, 2027, before concluding the second round against Korea on March 1, 2027.
In parallel with the qualifiers, Qatar is preparing to compete in basketball at the Asian Games “Aichi–Nagoya 2026” in Japan, adding another major challenge to the team’s competitive calendar.
This sequence of fixtures forms part of Qatar’s long‑term preparation plan ahead of hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027, with the technical staff aiming to maximize continental exposure, strengthen team cohesion, and achieve peak readiness for the global event in Doha next year.
