FIBA ASIA CONGRESS 2014

DOHA, Qatar 24-July-2014 (FIBA Asia): Delegates from 45 countries have begun to descend in the Qatari capital of Doha for the biggest conglomeration of basketball administrators in Asia – the 2014 FIBA Asia Elective Congress scheduled for Friday – to deliberate and discuss on the road map ahead for one of the biggest zones in the FIBA family.

The 2014 FIBA Asia Elective Congress will also elect the newly constituted FIBA Asia Central Board for the 2014-18 term as prescribed the FIBA Asia General Bye-Laws.

The FIBA Asia Elective Congress will also welcome its 45th NF member in East Timor, who will be placed under SEABA sub-zone.

Sheikh Saud bin Ali Al-Thani has been re-elected unanimously as FIBA Asia President Sheikh Saud bin Ali Al-Thani – for a fourth consecutive four-year term, and will be joined by six office-bearers to be elected at the 2014 FIBA Asia Elective Congress. FIBA Asia Secretary General Hagop Khajirian and the nominees of six FIBA Asia Sub Zones will complete the 2014-18 FIBA Asia Central Board.

“The FIBA Asia Congress is an occasion for celebration, introspection and planning. It’s an occasion for us to reflect on what we have done in the last four years and look at what needs to be done in the next four. The Congress is exactly the point when we look at the road we came by and the road ahead with plans for course correction,” Sheikh Saud bin Ali Al-Thani said.

“The FIBA Asia Congress is also an occasion to celebrate basketball with friends from all over the world under one roof. More so in Asia, given the diversities of backgrounds, culture, languages that we have within our region,” he said.

FIBA Asia Secretary General Hagop Khajirian called upon the FIBA Asia Congress to deliberate and propose methods to uplift the overall standard of basketball especially in National Federations who are not traditionally strong.

“We have to do this at the immediate near future,” he said adding that: “The new competition system that comes into vogue from 2017 onwards puts the onus on the National Federations to be completely organized.”

“FIBA Asia will come up with a comprehensive plan to meet the challenges that arise from the new competition system, but first up we’d like to listen to the National Federations themselves. I’m sure the FIBA Asia Congress will be very fruitful in that direction,” he said.

“We also express our sincere appreciation to the Qatar Basketball Federation under the dynamic leadership of Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani for hosting the FIBA Asia Congress in Doha,” he added.

3x3 - Stellar Qatar takes home 3x3 World Champs trophy

MOSCOW (3x3) - When it looked like history repeating two years after Athens with US women retaining their title and Serbia's men in the final, Qatar had maybe their best game of the tournament (18-13) and enjoyed a historic win at the 2014 FIBA 3x3 World Championships on 8 June 2014 in Moscow, Russia.

"This is the first time Qatar wins a major international event. It never happened in football, in volleyball, in handball," lanky captain Yaseen Musa rejoiced.

"It is one the best moments of my career and it shows that there is  an opportunity for smaller nations like Qatar to be successful."

Not only did Qatar bring the best basketball talents in the country -  featuring Musa but also the intimidating Erfan Ali Saeed, rebounding  machine Mohammed Seleem Abdulla and dribbling wizard Boney Watson - they  also spent the last two years getting used to the game, a preparation  that saw them climb from 3x3 FIBA Asia champion at home in 2013 to the  world title this year.

In the final, Qatar locked the paint and held the attacking-minded  Serbia to a tournament-low 13 points. Saeed wowed the Russian crowds  with several world-class post moves and US-born Boney Watson  relentlessly shook his defender, drove hard and finished at the rim. He  topped all scorers with 8 points in the final.

The local fans erupted in the bronze medal match when Mihail Gunter  took giant steps to the rim and gave Russia the lead with two seconds  left to play. It was another crushing defeat for Lithuania who had lost  in overtime against Qatar in the semi-finals just a few hours earlier.

Al Rayyan bag GCC 3x3 basketball title

Al Rayyan Club, led by veteran player Yaseen Ismail Musa, beat Al Sadd Club to win the inaugural GCC 3x3 basketball title, in Manama, Bahrain, on Saturday.

In an all-Qatari final, Musa, Chauncey Leslie, Malek Seleem al Abdulla and Mohammed Seleem al Abdulla all pooled in their efforts to hold off Al Sadd by 22-16.

Bahrain’s Al Manama Club finished third, beating Nazwa of Oman 21-13.

Al Rayyan and Al Sadd, who fielded Erfan Ali Saeed, Daoud Mousa Daoud, Larry Blair and Saad Abdulrahman Ali, performed brilliantly and topped their respective pools to enter the quarter-finals.

Al Rayyan crushed Ohod of Saudi Arabia 21-8, while Al Sadd had also posted a dominant 21-9 victory over Al Nasr of Kuwait before advancing to the semi-finals.

Al Manama and Nazwa crumbled under the pressure by talented Al Sadd and Al Rayyan and lost 16-22 and 13-21, respectively.

This victory completed a grand GCC 3x3 double by Qatar, who had claimed the national teams crown in Muscat, Oman in February.

Musa was thrilled with his team’s victory. “Of course, we won the title, but it was the triumph of the Qatari basketball. Over the years, our basketball has grown solidly and our depth saw both the Qatari teams in the final.

“I’m delighted to have finished on the winning side. It was a great tournament. Other teams were also strong but we managed to keep them off with our aggressive approach.

“Malek, Mohammed and Chauncey all worked very hard, rose to the challenges and handled the important situations with skill and intelligence. Indeed, it was a fine team effort,” added Musa.

Mohammed Seleem al Abdulla commented: “We’re very pleased with this title. We did not have good domestic season this year and the first title for us will go a long way in rebuilding and preparing the team for the next season.”

Qatar Basketball Federation President Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman al Thani congratulated  Al Rayyan Club Chairman Sheikh Saoud bin Khalid al Thani on the regional honour and hailed the final between two Qatari teams as the success of the national basketball.

“I wish to congratulate Al Rayyan Club on winning the GCC 3x3 basketball title. It was the first year of the championship and everybody remembers the first winner. Both Al Rayyan and Al Sadd played superbly and showed their caliber by reaching the final despite strong resistance by other teams.

“This is a memorable achievement as Qatar had won the GCC 3x3 national teams championship and now our team has emerged the champion in the GCC clubs 3x3 event,” added Sheikh Saoud.
