Watson drove strong to the basket for two in the ensuing play to push the reigning champions to within one, 73-74, and Omar Salem gave up a quick foul on Erfan Saeed who split his charities giving Al Rayyan a two-point advantage with 12 seconds to go.

Targuy Ngombo capped his stellar showing with a block on Oussay Ndiaye in Al Gharafa’s last offensive before Suleiman Braimoh got an open shot from the rainbow territory that almost went.

Coach Brian Rowsom and his boys are now ahead 2-1 and are looking to get the series wrapped up with another victory on Monday.

Al Gharafa tie series with Al Rayyan, Al Sadd repeat over Al Arabi

Al Gharafa extricated themselves from a 23-24 halftime deficit with a thunderous 19-2 scoring barrage in the third period to romp up a hard-earned 71-62 series-equalizing victory over Al Rayyan in the main game of Emir Cup semifinals last night.

Oussey Ndiaye and Suleiman Braimoh combined for 42 points of the defending champions output as Boney Watson capped his game long brilliance with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.

Without Al Sadd’s prized centre Al Arabi’s big men made a dent in the inside lane for the remainder of the third period and managed to prune the deficit, 61-76.

In the final period, Coach Hatem Mamlouk’s boys pushed hard on defense and inched closer 76-83 behind Jalloh Abdullah and Shelton Colwell.

But the effort proved short as Al Sadd’s wily point guard Fontenet and Khalid Suliman unleashed back-to-back long bombers to keep their rivals at bay 94-83 going into the dying minutes even as they lost two key players, Southall and Abdulrahman, on five personal fouls.

Al Rayyan, Al Sadd take Semis Game 1

Erfan Saeed saw action in the third period but came out blazing with a 15-point production in 12 minutes he was in the ballgame to pull Al Rayyan out from a 38-39 deficit to an 87-79 rousing victory over defending champions Al Gharafa in the first game of their best-of-five semifinal series in the Emir Cup last night .

Ngombo topscored for Al Rayyan, De Von Hardin added 13 and Mousa had 12. Salem finished with 15 for Al Gharafa, managing a solitary trey  in the second half, akin to the rest of his team’s shooting average in the final 20 minutes of the game.

Al Arabi, outrun and outdone in the paint in the first two periods took it strong in the inside at the onset of the third period to inch closer 42-43 behind Alvin Mofunanya who sparked his team to an 11-6 blitz.

With Jason Fontenet taking command at the point Al Sadd kept their composure and held on to their lead, 55-52 before the start of the final period.
