Qatar Men’s League Recap

Al Rayyan snares fourth straight title

Al Rayyan was denied an unblemished finish in the Qatar Men’s League on Sunday but ran away just the same with the championship crown for the fourth consecutive time by way of a hard-earned 13-1 win-loss record that bested all others in the eight-team tournament roster.

Bowing 69-78 to a fighting Al Gharafa squad in their final assignment, the defending champions assured themselves of the title after an 82-65 demolition of Al Saad on Tuesday that pushed them way ahead of the pack with an insurmountable 12-0 slate.

The powerhouse squad, boasting an awesome starting line-up bannered by National Team stalwart and NBA-draftee Alban Ngombo and a prolific import in La Mont Leslie, captured their 15th title in the league since its inaugural in 1981. Qatar Club has won 7 titles while Al Arabi has garnered 5 in the 31-year old tournament.

Elated but his eyes on the tournament ahead, hardworking Brian Rowsom of Al Rayyan declares “ We are very happy we won the league championship. We played good and I’d like to thank the boys for playing hard. But now we’d like to focus on the Heir Apparent  Cup. We want to get better for the upcoming league and we have our two imports flying in tomorrow.”

Al Saad bag first runner-up honors

Denied a shot at the title by titlist Al Rayaan, Coach Zoran Kreckovic’s wards missed the presence of import Benjamin Southall but relied on the heads up play of National Team mainstays Abdulrahman Ali and Djibril Abdoulaye to overwhelm Qatar Club, 78-64, earlier and peg an 11-3 first runner-up finish in the league.

Al Arabi secure third place

On Saturday night, Al Arabi blasted off Al Wakrah 103-71 to secure a 9-5 win-loss record and capture second runner-up honors. With token resistance offered by their rivals, Al Arabi put on a scoring rampage from start to finish to lead all quarters, 24-11, 52-34 and 77-57, and ran away with an easy victory that assured the squad of a third place finish in the league.

Al Gharafa break Al Rayyan streak

Edged out and relegated to fourth place by Al Arabi, Al Gharafa pounded on Al Rayyan, 78-69, in the league’s final game on Sunday to break the latter’s winning streak to 13 and console themselves with the distinction of being the sole tormentor of the eventual champions in the tournament.

Al Ahli surprise El Jaish

Pestered in the first three quarters by the shackling defense of El Jaish, Al Ahli buckled down to work early in the final period and staged a mighty comeback to escape with a 67-65 victory on Saturday night.
The win improved Al Ahli’s record to 5-9 and landed 6th behind El Jaish who finished the season with a 7-7 win-loss slate.

Al Gharafa defangs Al Sadd in Heir Apparent Cup

Defending champions Al Gharafa ran its offensive patterns to the hilt and defied Michael Southall’s hulking presence in the shaded lane to frustrate an out of synched Al Sadd squad, 70-61, in the main game last night of the HH Heir Apparent Cup at Al Gharafa Indoor Arena.

With their second straight win, Coach Koussay Hatem’s wards booked themselves a ticket to the semifinal round and forced Al Sadd into a knock-out match with Al Arabi on Sunday.

Boney Watson starred for the champions’ all around dominance of their foes with 25 points with reinforcement Michael Cuffee contributing 21 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists.

Earlier in the first game, Jalloh Abdullah and Alvin Mofunaya combined for 41 points and 28 rebounds to lift Al Arabi past Al Wakrah, 71-58 to notch their first win and stay on course for a possible semifinal’s berth.

Trailing 17-20 after the opening period, Al Arabi blazed to a 10-0 run at the onset of the second quarter, scattering a total of 26 points while limiting Al Wakrah’s output to merely 6, to lead 43-26 after 20 minutes of play.

Al Wakrah tried to fight back in the second half of play behind imports Darren Kelly and Elliah Clark, who fell short of their efforts as Al Arabi managed to keep them at bay until the final buzzer.

Jalloh, who was all over the place all game long had 27 points, 15 rebounds and 8 assists. Mofunanya contributed 14 points and hauled down 13 rebounds.

Al Ahli edges Qatar Club in Heir Apparent Cup

Al Ahli outplayed Qatar Club in the homestretch and run away with a 73-71 squeaker last night to get into the winning column of Group 1 in the HH Heir Apparent Cup at the Al Gharafa Indoor Arena.

With the game tied at 68, Al Ahli pushed themselves to a 73-68 advantage over their rivals and escaped with the victory with time to waste  even as Temie Soyebo chopped the lead with a bomber with less than 5 seconds remaining.

Qatar Club came out of the dug out on fire and unleashed a 10-2 attack starring Maurice Mc Neil and Temie Soyebo to equalize, 44-44, halfway in the 3rd quarter. But Augustine Okosun lorded the shaded lane to help Al Ahli regain upper hand at 52-49, before Qatar Club crawled back and zoom to their biggest lead 60-52, at end of third quarter.

Cory Bradford combined with Okosun to lead a strong start in the final period as Al Ahli regained momentum and never looked back.

In the main game, Al Rayyan got off to a strong start and burned rubber for 40 minutes to humble a disgruntled El Jaish quintet, 88-58.

Banking as expected on his big four starring import Chauncey Leslie and NBA-draftee Tanguy Ngombo, Coach Brian Rowson led Al Rayyan to their second win and stayed on their way to the next round.

Al Sadd upends Al Wakrah

Benjamin Southall turned in a double-double performance to lead Al Sadd to a 75-68 stoppage of Al Wakrah in the first game last night of Group 2 basketball action in the 13th HH Apparent Cup at the Al Gharafa Indoor Arena.

With Al Wakrah reinforcements Clark Karon and Kelly Darren connecting from the outside, Al Sadd trailed 17-18 in the opening minutes and could only manage a solitary point advantage, 34-33, at the end of the half.

Al Sadd stepped on the gas in the opening minutes of the third to establish a 47-39 lead behind a 12-6 run anchored on the awesome duo of Benjamin Southall and Jibril Abdoulaye before Al Wakrah’s gunners woke up to close the gap, 54-50, at the end of the period.

Kept within striking distance for most of the final period, Al Sadd pulled away going into the last two minutes of the game erecting a 73-63 lead as Al Wakrah’s guns turned sour.

El Jaish puts one over Al Ahli

It was Army’s turn this time around. Like a team possessed, El Jaish fashioned out a methodical 78-66 annihilation of Al Ahli in the main game of opening day action in the Heir Apparent

Cup and joined Al Rayyan, who defeated Qatar Club earlier, on top of Group I with one win apiece.

El Jaish thus vindicated their loss to the same squad in the penultimate day of the recently concluded Qatar Men’s League that shoved them away from contention for second runner up honors.

Qatar National Team gunner Ahmad Mohammad starred for the Army squad, which took control of the match from the opening tip up to the final buzzer, contributing 20 points and 8 rebounds. All five starters of Al Ahli scored in double figures but waned in their efforts this time to pull another one from their counterparts.
