Al Arabi, El Jaish devour rivals in Emir Cup

Al Arabi played relentless in the final period and quelled a last ditch stand by Al Rayyan to run away with an 82-73 hard-earned victory in the main game last night of the Emir Cup.

Alvin Mofunanya sparked a 9-0 scoring blitz behind tenacious defense late in the thrird quarter to pull the HH Heir Apparent champions away from a 46-deadlock to a commanding 55-46, two minutes left in the period before Leslie led a 6-0 run by the Qatar Men’s League titlists to inch closer, 52-55, after three quarters.

Al Rayyan continued the attack and grabbed the lead, 57-55, but Mofunanya combined with Masoos Khaled and Jalloh Abdullah to help Al Arabi regain advantage and soar to their biggest lead, 74-62, going into the last two minutes of the game.

Erfan Saeed, carrying the cudgels from the injured Targuy Ngombo, refused to give up and scattered consecutive long bombs to keep Al Arabi within striking distance.

Abdullah, Mogunanya and William Byrd ensured the Arabi’s second win as they went hundred percent charity shots off desperation fouls by Al Rayyan in the endgame.

In the first game, El Jaish needed 5 extra minutes and banked on the endgame heroics of Sheik Touri to edge a determined but luckless Maurice Mc Neill-led Qatar Club, 101-99.

Sheik Touri scored on a strong drive to the basket in the last 20 seconds of the overtime period to pull out the squeaker and steer his team to their first win in two outings.

Eric Rashad’s charges were outplayed in the first half as Mc Neill dominated the paint and carried Qatar Club to 27-17 and 49-36 advantage in the early periods.

After the halftime break, eventual best player Mohammed Baker, Fadi Abilmona and import Larry Cox worked up their way on both ends of the floor to help El Jaish gain upper hand, 70-66 at the end of the third quarter.

But Mc Neill asserted his power in the inside lane and pushed Qatar Club back in the driver’s seat, 79-77, five minutes gone in the final quarter and helped his team keep the  lead, 88-86, with one minute and a half in regulation.

Fadi sank a put back off a miss under the basket by Cox, less than a minute in the game clock to bring the game to 88-all and into overtime as both teams went zero in the ensuing offensive exchanges.

Baker top scored for Army with 31 points, overshadowing Mc Neill’s sterling 33-point, 14-rebound contribution for Qatar Club.
